Sierra Crest
This is the view from the overlook on the way up to the Mt. Rose Meadows, looking west towards the Sierra Crest and the backside of Alpine
Meadows Ski Resort to the right in the distance. The Cal-Neva hotel and casino can be seen on the spit of land in the middle foreground. The land is positioned over a very active earthquake fault, thus the
130-degree hot springs located at that point, and is actually the remnant of a lava flow from millions of years ago. The north end of the Tahoe basin was sealed off by a series of volcanic eruptions that ultimately
allowed melting glaciers from the last ice age to fill the basin with water. It would take 700 years to fill the basin in today's climate regime.
