An Inverted Domain: Winter Inversions
Mountain folk also get the winter blues, unless they're lucky enough to ski everyday. Sometimes even that doesn't help. In the dead of winter (now), those that can't ride a chairlift above the
localized fog, suffer the inversion conditions of cold, damp and foggy weather between winter storms. I could have shown a classic photo of Reno enduring an inversion with nasty looking clouds and an atmosphere that
you wouldn't want to breathe, but deferred to the more artistic and seemingly benign portrayal of cold air hugging the ground (taken yesterday in Martis Valley near the Truckee airport - Jan. 4). The scene could
be interpreted as nostalgic or charming, but in reality if you were camping there it would be very cold and damp. Indians from the region (mostly Washoe from western Nevada) called Lake Tahoe home in the spring,
summer, and fall, but rarely dealt with the high country in winter. Duh.
