Tahoe Nugget #24:
Bishop, California
Can't say enough about Bishop, California. See that green patch in the photo? It's a great base camp for anyone who wants to enjoy great
hiking, photography, fishing, camping, hot springs, wildlife, solitude...you name it. Restaurants are decent, but don't expect fancy cuisine.
Bishop is located smack dab between Los Angeles and Reno on
what I consider one of the most spectacular stretches of road in the United States. Highway 395 runs along the eastern escarpment of the massive Sierra Nevada range. Less than 4,000 people live in Bishop, but many
are escapees from L.A. and southern California so Bishop is no hick town.
The valley floor elevation is 4,121 feet, which may seem high on the East Coast, but in the southern Sierra where peaks routinely
exceed 14,000 feet, Bishop can feel almost tropical, except for the low humidity of course.
