Tahoe Nugget #156 Tahoe Basin: Fall into Winter Last week the first snowstorm of the season brought just enough snow for a few days of backcountry skiing, boarding and snowshoeing. Mammoth Mountain opened recently with a 12 to 48 inch base of natural and manmade snow and is now running six chair lifts. Conditions are definitely early season, but a lift ticket there will still cost you $69. Ouch! That price is certainly steeper than the slopes that are open. Boreal Mountain Resort (near Donner Pass) is the only Tahoe area resort open at this point. The base there is less than a foot deep, but most people buying tickets at Boreal this early in the season are young snowboarders hitting installed terrain features like rails and ramps. Don't need much snow for that. The other Tahoe resorts are planning to open in time for the Thanksgiving holiday crowds. With no major storms on the horizon for another week, Tahoe resorts would like to blow as much manmade snow as possible when conditions permit. However, temperatures rebounded quickly this week with highs near 60 in the upper elevations and overnight lows above freezing on the slopes. In the Sacramento Valley, temps near 80 degrees are tying or breaking records in many locations. When it comes to winter sports, no matter how much you invest in technology, sometimes you just have to wait for Mother Nature to help out. With that in mind, forecasters are starting to mention a possible pattern change by next weekend. Keep your snow shovel handy!
